Development is attributed to researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow during the early 1980s, building on earlier Soviet work with ACTH fragments. Russian regulatory approval followed for intranasal use, and the compound has remained commercially available there for decades. Most published human data originate from Russian and, later, some Eastern European clinical reports, which are not always accessible in English translation. Outside that region the material is generally handled as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine.
Regulatory status differs sharply between jurisdictions. In Russia the peptide is registered as a prescription nasal preparation, while agencies such as the United States Food and Drug Administration have not approved it for any indication. Products sold elsewhere are typically labeled for laboratory research only, and such labels shift responsibility for safe handling to the purchaser. Because the same name covers pharmaceutical-grade nasal drops and bulk research powder, identity and purity documentation becomes the main practical concern when comparing sources.
Regulatory status varies sharply by country. Semax is registered for medical use in Russia, where it appears in formularies as a nasal solution, and it also holds registration in a small number of neighbouring states. It has no approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency, and it is not a scheduled controlled substance in most jurisdictions. Elsewhere it circulates mainly as laboratory material, so purity documentation comes from suppliers rather than from a national pharmacopoeia.
Semax is a synthetic peptide created in the Soviet Union during the early 1980s by researchers working in Moscow. It was built from the short adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment known as ACTH(4-10), and the chain was then extended with three additional amino acids. The resulting molecule was named semax and entered clinical use in Russia in 1994. It is generally described as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent rather than as a hormone analogue.

=== Desalination/ion separation === MOF membranes can achieve substantial ion selectivity due to their small repeating structures. This offers the potential for use in desalination and water treatment. As of 2020, reverse osmosis supplied more than two-thirds of global desalination capacity, and the last stage of most water treatment processes. Osmosis does not use dehydration of ions, or selective ion transport in biological channels and it is not energy efficient. The mining industry uses membrane-based processes to reduce water pollution, and to recover metals. MOFs could be used to extract metals such as lithium from seawater and waste streams. MOF membranes such as ZIF-8 and UiO-66 membranes with uniform subnanometer pores consisting of angstrom-scale windows and nanometer-scale cavities displayed ultrafast selective transport of alkali metal ions. The windows acted as ion selectivity filters for alkali metal ions, while the cavities functioned as pores for transport. The ZIF-8 and UiO-66 membranes showed a LiCl/RbCl selectivity of ~4.6 and ~1.8, respectively, much higher than the 0.6 to 0.8 selectivity in traditional membranes. A 2020 study suggested that a new MOF called PSP-MIL-53 could be used along with sunlight to purify water in just half an hour.
After absorbing the Lodges around Havana and some other parts of the island, GOCA was recognized as regular and correct by the Supreme Councils of France, England, Scotland, and some other European countries. According to some Masonic historians, however, Cuba and the Antiles was considered illegal. From 1862 to 1868 GOCA established roughly twenty Lodges around the country. de Castro had no luck in absorbing any of the Lodges around Santiago de Cuba, and they remained loyal to the Grand Orient of Colon. Eastern and Western Cuba became increasingly bifurcated in Freemasonry. Despite being the birthplace of Cuban Freemasonry, Oriente Province, and especially Santiago de Cuba, were considered culturally and geographically isolated to the Lodges around Havana. Andrés Cassard and Albert Pike became furious with de Castro. Pike wrote a letter dated November 17, 1865, and accused GOCA of insubordination. He called it "...nothing more than a putrid den of Jacobins." Pike lamented that GOCA was a club more concerned with politics, and not one that upheld the ideals of Freemasonry. In direct opposition to Pike, GOCA published content in which stated that the Southern Jurisdiction was stuck in the dark ages of Old-Testament mysticism. They argued that instead of the Anglo-American motto of Freemasonry, theirs was more closely aligned with the original French Masonic tradition that had once existed in Cuba: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. They espoused liberalism, declared themselves to be rationalist and Enlightenment thinkers, democratic and anticlerical.
=== Blood group systems === Red blood cell membranes consist of a phospholipid bilayer, littered with proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and combinations of these substances. These substances are called antigens because they stimulate an immune response when an individual is exposed to the substance, but the exposed individual does not carry nor express the genes which encode said antigens. Each individual has a unique genetic and phenotypic makeup of antigens, much like the dermatoglyphics of human fingerprints. As of 2023, there are 44 blood group systems, each containing several red blood cell antigens totaling 354, determined by approximately 49 separate genes. Of these antigens, only a handful are considered clinically significant, meaning that they can stimulate the production of antibodies capable of causing red cell hemolysis. This is particularly important for the transfusion of packed red blood cells and other cellular blood products. Examples of blood group systems that contain antigens capable of inducing clinically significant alloantibodies (antibodies against non-self antigens) include, but are not limited to the ABO, Rh, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, and MNS blood group systems.
==== Utility ==== The main clinical utility of NT-proBNP is that a normal level helps to rule out chronic heart failure in the emergency setting. An elevated NT-proBNP should never be used exclusively to "rule in" acute or chronic heart failure in the emergency setting due to lack of specificity . Either BNP or NT-proBNP can also be used for screening and prognosis of heart failure. Increased NT-proBNP adjusted for age and sex and annual increase of NT-proBNP above 50% are associated with increased event rate in patients with non-severe aortic valve stenosis. BNP and NT-proBNP are also typically increased in patients with left ventricular dysfunction, with or without symptoms (BNP accurately reflects current ventricular status, as its half-life is 20 minutes, as opposed to 1–2 hours for NT-proBNP). A preoperative BNP can be predictive of a risk of an acute cardiac event during vascular surgery. A cutoff of 100 pg/ml has a sensitivity of approximately 100%, a negative predictive value of approximately 100%, a specificity of 90%, and a positive predictive value of 78% according to data from the United Kingdom. There is a diagnostic 'gray area', often defined as between 100 and 500 pg/mL, for which the test is considered inconclusive, but, in general, levels above 500 pg/ml are considered to be an indicator of heart failure. This so-called gray zone has been addressed in several studies, and using clinical history or other available simple tools can help make the diagnosis. Some laboratories report in units ng per Litre (ng/L), which is equivalent to pg/mL.
Due to its sedative and tranquilizing properties, it was used to quiet the minds of those with psychosis, help with people who were considered insane, and also to help treat patients with insomnia. However, despite its medicinal values in these cases, it was noted that in cases of psychosis, it could cause anger or depression, and due to the drug's euphoric effects, it could cause depressed patients to become more depressed after the effects wore off because they would get used to being high. The standard medical use of opium persisted well into the 19th century. US president William Henry Harrison was treated with opium in 1841, and in the American Civil War, the Union Army used 175,000 lb (80,000 kg) of opium tincture and powder and about 500,000 opium pills. During this time of popularity, users called opium "God's Own Medicine". One reason for the increase in opiate consumption in the United States during the 19th century was the prescribing and dispensing of legal opiates by physicians and pharmacists to women with "female complaints" (mostly to relieve menstrual pain and hysteria). Because opiates were viewed as more humane than punishment or restraint, they were often used to treat the mentally ill. Between 150,000 and 200,000 opiate addicts lived in the United States in the late 19th century and between two-thirds and three-quarters of these addicts were women. Opium addiction in the later 19th century received a hereditary definition. Dr.

Reports indicated that oil prices rose above 100 USD per barrel, while jet fuel prices increased significantly, in some cases more than doubling compared to the previous month. European markets were identified as particularly vulnerable, with concerns raised over potential fuel shortages within weeks if supply conditions did not stabilise. Industry groups and analysts warned that continued disruption could lead to operational challenges at European airports, including potential flight cancellations and capacity constraints. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) noted that even in the event of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, recovery in jet fuel supply could take months due to persistent constraints in refining capacity and logistics across the region. In response to the rising energy prices, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England left interest rates unchanged.
=== 2014 traffic collision and lawsuit === On June 7, 2014, Morgan was a passenger in a Mercedes Sprinter minibus involved in a six-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cranbury when it was struck from behind by a Walmart tractor-trailer, causing a chain reaction crash. Morgan and three other comedians, including Harris Stanton, along with Morgan's assistant and two limousine company employees, who were traveling on Morgan's "Turn it Funny" stand-up comedy tour, were involved in the crash. The crash killed Morgan's friend and collaborator, 62-year-old comedian James McNair (Jimmy Mack). Morgan was taken to the hospital with a broken femur, broken nose, a traumatic brain injury, and several broken ribs, and underwent surgery on his leg on June 8. From June 20 to July 12, Morgan stayed in a rehabilitation facility to recover from the injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the truck which caused the accident pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, and an early investigation by National Transportation Safety Board found the driver had been on the road for nearly as many hours as the legal limit. Morgan also sued Walmart for negligence, settling in 2015 for an undisclosed amount. On June 1, 2015, Morgan made his first public appearance since the crash, in an interview with Matt Lauer on Today, stating he still suffered from symptoms of his injuries. On the November 3, 2016 episode of Conan, Morgan said that he was no longer angry about the collision and had forgiven the driver.
Other inborn errors of metabolism include riboflavin-responsive multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, also known as a subset of glutaric acidemia type 2, and the C677T variant of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme, which in adults has been associated with risk of high blood pressure.
=== Molecular classification === As with bacterial classification, identification of bacteria is increasingly using molecular methods, and mass spectroscopy. Most bacteria have not been characterised and there are many species that cannot be grown in the laboratory. Diagnostics using DNA-based tools, such as polymerase chain reaction, are increasingly popular due to their specificity and speed, compared to culture-based methods. These methods also allow the detection and identification of "viable but nonculturable" cells that are metabolically active but non-dividing. The main way to characterize and classify these bacteria is to isolate their DNA from environmental samples and mass-sequence them. This approach has identified thousands, if not millions of candidate species. Based on some estimates, more than 43,000 species of bacteria have been described, but attempts to estimate the true number of bacterial diversity have ranged from 107 to 109 total species—and even these diverse estimates may be off by many orders of magnitude.

It is a short synthetic peptide built from seven amino acids: methionine, glutamic acid, histidine, phenylalanine and three prolines. The sequence derives from the 4-10 fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone with an added proline-glycine-proline tail. No plant or animal extract is involved; the material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis.
It was developed in the Soviet Union during the early 1980s by groups at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow. Russian approval for intranasal use followed, and it has been marketed there since. Western laboratories encountered it mainly through translated literature and, later, through online research-chemical trade.
It holds a Russian registration as a prescription nasal product but has no approval from the European Medicines Agency or the United States Food and Drug Administration. Buyers outside Russia usually receive material sold strictly for laboratory research. That distinction matters because research-grade and pharmaceutical-grade products carry different documentation and testing expectations.
Registered medical products are most often 0.1% nasal drops. Research suppliers ship lyophilized powder, usually in milligram quantities, which is dissolved before use. The active peptide is the same in both cases; presentation and excipients differ.
