This is a working overview of heptapeptide, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide developed in the Soviet Union during the 1980s by researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow. It was designed as a truncated analog of adrenocorticotropic hormone, retaining only the fragment spanning residues four through ten. Investigators sought a peptide that would preserve the cognitive effects associated with ACTH while eliminating the hormonal stimulation of the adrenal cortex. The compound entered clinical use in Russia during the following decade.
Russian regulatory authorities approved the peptide for nasal administration, and it remains listed in the national pharmacopoeia under several trade names. Documented indications include acute ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attacks, traumatic brain injury, and certain ophthalmological and neurological conditions. Physicians also prescribe it for cognitive complaints in older patients, although the evidence base for that use is thinner. Outside Russia and a few neighboring states, the substance is not an approved medicine and is sold instead as a research chemical.
Semax is a synthetic peptide created in the Soviet Union during the early 1980s by researchers working in Moscow. It was built from the short adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment known as ACTH(4-10), and the chain was then extended with three additional amino acids. The resulting molecule was named semax and entered clinical use in Russia in 1994. It is generally described as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent rather than as a hormone analogue.
The parent fragment ACTH(4-10) carries the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly. Semax replaces the arginine and tryptophan positions with a proline-glycine-proline tail, giving Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. That change removes residues associated with adrenal stimulation, so the peptide does not drive cortisol release the way full ACTH does. This distinction shapes how the compound is grouped in the literature, where it sits with neuropeptides and peptide neuromodulators rather than with corticosteroids.

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It corresponds to the ACTH(4-7) fragment extended at the C-terminus by a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide, an addition intended to slow enzymatic breakdown. The molecular formula is C37H51N9O10S and the molecular mass is approximately 814 daltons. In the literature it is often described as an ACTH(4-10) analog, although that label reflects a naming convention as much as a precise structural relationship. The compound was developed in Russia and remains most closely associated with that research tradition.
Laboratory descriptions of the material are consistent across suppliers. It appears as a white to off-white lyophilized powder that dissolves readily in water and in polar organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide. Aqueous solutions are clear and colorless at low concentrations. Because the peptide contains methionine, oxidation at the sulfur atom is a recognized degradation pathway, and handling notes usually call for protected, desiccated storage. Reported purity for research-grade lots is generally above 95 percent as measured by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.
Microbial growth and proliferation can be inhibited by a technique called biopreservation. Biopreservation is achieved by adding antimicrobials or by increasing the acidity of the fish muscle. Most bacteria stop multiplying when the pH is less than 4.5. Acidity is increased by fermentation, marination or by directly adding acids (acetic, citric, lactic) to fish products. Lactic acid bacteria produce the antimicrobial nisin which further enhances preservation. Other preservatives include nitrites, sulphites, sorbates, benzoates and essential oils.
=== Obesity and pseudoacanthosis nigricans (Type III) === In young people, acanthosis nigricans is a visible marker of insulin resistance. Elevated insulin stimulates epidermal proliferation. Insulin resistance syndromes may be classified as type A (HAIR-AN) or type B. Most cases are obesity-associated and otherwise idiopathic. This pattern is more common in darker-skinned individuals and is sometimes termed pseudoacanthosis nigricans. Facial involvement may appear as a horizontal forehead band or as periorbital or perioral hyperpigmentation.
=== Biosynthesis === Like other steroid hormones, testosterone is derived from cholesterol (Figure 1). The first step in the biosynthesis involves the oxidative cleavage of the side-chain of cholesterol by cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc, CYP11A1), a mitochondrial cytochrome P450 oxidase with the loss of six carbon atoms to give pregnenolone. In the next step, two additional carbon atoms are removed by the CYP17A1 (17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase) enzyme in the endoplasmic reticulum to yield a variety of C19 steroids. In addition, the 3β-hydroxyl group is oxidized by 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase to produce androstenedione. In the final and rate limiting step, the C17 keto group androstenedione is reduced by 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase to yield testosterone. The largest amounts of testosterone (>95%) are produced by the testes in men, while the adrenal glands account for most of the remainder. Testosterone is also synthesized in far smaller total quantities in women by the adrenal glands, thecal cells of the ovaries, and, during pregnancy, by the placenta. In the testes, testosterone is produced by the Leydig cells. The male generative glands also contain Sertoli cells, which require testosterone for spermatogenesis. Like most hormones, testosterone is supplied to target tissues in the blood where much of it is transported bound to a specific plasma protein, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine and quinidine) can increase exposure for atomoxetine and it can also increase atomoxetine steady-state plasma concentration. Antihypertensive drugs because it can possibly increase the blood pressure β2-agonist e.g. albuterol because it may increase the efficacy of albuterol on the cardiovascular system. Medicines that affect norepinephrine (e.g. venlafaxine, imipramine, mirtazapine) should be used with caution when administered with atomoxetine due to possible synergy or synergistic effects on pharmacodynamic effects. Beware of taking reboxetine in combination with:
=== Environmental aspects === Silk is often held up as a prime example of green chemistry in materials science, and the argument is not without merit. Fibroin can be purified and processed largely in water, avoiding the organic solvents and high temperatures typically required for synthetic polymers, and the protein itself is renewable and biodegradable. The recovery of both fibroin and sericin from silk and textile industries turns waste and by-products into feedstock. Benefits like these have to be weighed against the resource needs of silk farming and the energy involved in degumming and purification.

The investigation by Science and the NIH was triggered by whistleblowers who delivered a 113 page dossier to Science. The dossier presented evidence that patients treated with 3K3A-APC died at a higher rate in the first week following treatment than those on the placebo (6 out of 66 versue 1 out 44). Also, patients on the drug suffered more disability. The dossier also claimed that data had been doctored in dozens of papers from Zlokovic's lab. Wade Smith, a University of California, San Francisco neurologist and StrokeNet principal investigator said that “I think pausing the trial until any impact of potential impropriety in preclinical drug testing is resolved to ensure the compound is safe for humans is the correct pathway to follow. This drug may work in humans so discarding it would be a shame,” he adds. “Alternatively, moving forward with a compound that may be unsafe is worse.”
RVT-802 is an investigational treatment for congenital athymia, primarily associated with DiGeorge syndrome. It is a tissue-based therapy that consists of cultured donor thymus-derived tissue. RVT-802 consists of donor thymus-derived tissue that is cultured and surgically implanted into the recipient In patients with congenital athymia, the thymus gland is absent. Because of the crucial role the thymus gland plays in the maturation and differentiation of T cells, athymia results in severe immunodeficiency, typically resulting in death within the first two years of life. RVT-802 is manufactured by extracting thymus tissue from infants undergoing cardiac surgery, depleting it of immature T cells to prevent graft-versus-host disease, then implanting the processed tissue into the recipient's leg, where it fulfils the immunological role of the thymus.
This detection method uses mammalian antibodies to bind to microbial toxins which can then be processed in a variety of different ways. Of the commercial ways of using immunochemical detection would be enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). This assay has the advantage of being able to screen for a broad range of toxins but could have issues with specificity depending on the antibody used. A more exotic setup involves the use of CdS quantum dots which are used in an electro-chemiluminescent immunosensor. A major aspect of immunochemical methods being tested in laboratories are uses of nanowires and other nanomaterials to detect microbial toxins.
=== Wound healing === As a component of skin tissue, collagen is a base material for medical products to support wound healing. When collagen is made available to the wound bed, closure can occur, avoiding wound deterioration and severe surgical procedures, such as amputation. Collagen is used as a natural wound dressing because it has properties that artificial wound dressings do not have. It resists bacteria, which is vitally important in wound dressing. As a burn dressing, collagen aids healing by enabling granulation tissue to grow over the burn. Throughout the four phases of wound healing, collagen performs the following functions:

It originated at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow during the 1980s. The work was carried out by a Russian research group that specialized in peptide neuropharmacology.
It is registered as a medicine in Russia and has been used clinically there for decades. No regulatory agency in Western Europe or North America has approved it for any indication.
Semax corresponds to the four-to-ten fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Because it omits the first three residues, it lacks the adrenal-stimulating action of the full hormone.
Registered medical products are most often 0.1% nasal drops. Research suppliers ship lyophilized powder, usually in milligram quantities, which is dissolved before use. The active peptide is the same in both cases; presentation and excipients differ.
